Comment:
What I like most about ‘Tempest’ is the emphasis on cultural backgrounds and how they’re highlighted within the characters. As a someone whose parents escaped from Vietnam after the war, I always loved my country and the strong sense of nationalism other Southern Vietnamese refugees feel for their waning culture… Even when they know that Communist corruption will eventually lead Vietnam’s destruction. I created Phuong to symbolize that still-present struggle to a save Vietnam’s true culture. A direct translation of Phoung Truyen’s name would be ‘Phoenix Story’.
